Mary Jane Kephart

This month’s illustrious Queen of Harmony River profile is fairly new to barbershop but has proven to be a huge asset to our family.

Mary Jane was first introduced to the art form last summer when she attended our summer show.  After talking to Doris Hammond she was convinced that this was something she wanted to try.  So Doris loaded her in her car and dragged her to a rehearsal.  She’s been with us ever since.

She started as a bari, but she wanted to try lead and is now a convert.  “Lead is more comfortable for me and it's fun to sing.”  And the lead section is thrilled to have her!  Candle on the Water and Bandstand are her favorite songs that we sing “because they just have so much feeling to them.”

Mary Jane comes to us with quite a bit of experience.  She was always in the chorus in school and was even a majorette in band.  She continued her love of music in the real world as an integral part of her church choir.  Now she has another outlet for her love of music:  our own Harmony River Chorus.

Mary Jane and her husband of 35 years, Sam, moved to Aiken three and a half years ago and have enjoyed themselves very much.  When she’s not singing, she volunteers in the marketing department at Aiken Regional Medical Center. She works about 14 hours a week, which keeps her mind busy and gives her the opportunity to meet new people.  For fun (besides singing) she likes to take trips and work on different projects at home with her husband.  She also belongs to “Wise Outrageous Women” and ”The Red Hat Society”. She likes to play golf, enjoys doing crafts and making Wedding albums.

When asked why she enjoys Sweet Adelines she responded, “I enjoy seeing everyone each week and the feeling of belonging to a great group of ladies.”  And we certainly enjoy having her as part of that group!
