Adelines win regional awards in barbershop competition. By Vicki Marzullo
The Peach State Chorus chapter of Sweet Adelines International received three awards in a five-state regional competition in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Saturday. Competing against choruses from Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Florida and Mississippi, the group won the Most Improved category, took second place in their size division and won fourth place overall. “When our group’s name was called three times, we couldn’t believe it,” said Mary Norman, a member of the chorus. In 2002, the chorus won Most Improved Chorus with 47 percent improvement rating. This year the group received an 87 percent rating. “We competed against 13 other groups,” Mrs. Norman said. “We’re one of the smallest groups with 40 members, so we were really surprised.” The Augusta-based Peach State Chorus, a part of Sweet Adelines International, is an a cappella women’s barbershop chorus. “The ladies took it from there with the four-chord sound. The four notes together give the barbershop chorus its sound.” In May, the chorus will officially change its name to River Harmony to reflect membership from both sides of the Savannah River. Any women interested in joining the group are invited to attend Guest Night at 7 p.m. May 8 at the Church of Christ, 600 Martintown Road. Open rehearsals are at 7 p.m. each Thursday. For more information, call Mrs. Norman at 279-6499, or visit www.sweetadelineintl.org.
