What would be a better place to feature an article on Adelines
than in Sass, a monthly newspaper for women in the Augusta area?

Step aside, Rosie the Riveter
Sweet Adelines International was started in 1945 by Edna Mae Anderson in
Tulsa, Oklahoma. She and some of her friends wanted to sing men's
barbershop quartet music. Today the organization has nearly 30,000 members
worldwide.
Augusta's Chapter
The Harmony River Chorus, an official, registered chorus of Sweet Adelines
International, was founded in 1976. The group participates in competitions
and performs about once a month. Members range in age from 19 to 85, and
careers include doctors, teachers, nurses and computer technicians.
What is Barbershop?
Barbershop music is sung in tight, four-part harmony without accompaniment
(a capella). The sweet Adelines even sing the men's parts: lead (melody),
tenor, baritone and bass (but up an octave, of course).
Wanna Sing?
The group is open to any woman in the community. They meet each
Thursday, 7 p.m. at the Church of Christ on Martintown Road in North Augusta.
You don't have to read music or have any formal music training--the ability to
ham it up is an added plus.
Quote on the side of the article:
"It's a good social outlet coming together to sing," says
Harmony River Chorus director Stacy Branch. "A lot of women are taking
care of families and job responsibilities. We all need one night of the
week just for us."
