Chorus sings for Joy!

The Peach State Chorus of Sweet Adelines International plans two concerts during August, one on each side of the Savannah.

On Saturday, Aug. 3, the chorus performs a benefit concert at the Aiken community Playhouse, 1613 Two Notch Road, Aiken.  A matinee performance will be at 3 p.m., and the evening performance takes place at 8 p.m.

Tickets for these shows are $12 for adults and $8 for children, and proceeds go to the building fund for the new Playhouse facility downtown.

“This will be the last performance in the original theater, so we’ll be closing it down,” said Doris Hammond, co-chairman for the Aiken performance.  “I think the new theatre is going to offer a lot of opportunity for other groups as well as the Playhouse.”

Hammond said she has acted in Playhouse productions.  Her daughter, Darcy Hammond-Ross, directs plays there, and her husband, Ted Hammond, serves on the Playhouse’s board of directors.

For tickets to the matinee, call Joann Sims at 649-0689, and for tickets to the 8 p.m. show, call Doris Hammond at 649-1710.

The second event will be at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, at Lakeside High School, 533 Blue Ridge Drive, Evans.  Tickets to this show are $10 for adults and $5 for ages 12 and younger.  For ticket information, call Mary Norman at 279-6499.

The Augusta-based choral group rehearses weekly at 7 p.m.  Thursdays at the North Augusta Church of Christ, 600 Martintown Road.  Rehearsals are open to the public.  The Aug. 15 rehearsal will be Special Guest Night, and any women interested in performing four-part a capella harmonies are invited to sit in.

“We do hope to find other interested women who like to sing and hope they will consider joining our group.  It’s a growing group, and we won the Most Improved Award at the recent district competition, “Hammond said.

Sweet Adelines International, a Tulsa, Okla.,-based organization, has been in existence for more than 55 years and boasts more than 30,000 members.  The Peach State Chorus was chare4red in 1976, and two charter members are still active with the singing group.

This fall, the Chorus plans to take part in Augusta’s Arts in the Heart of Augusta festival.  For more information about the Peach State Chorus or to schedule a performance, call Mildred Blain at 736-7730 or Mary Norman at 279-6499.
